Night Shift Schedule: Counter per Hour vs Carry Over
Night Shift
A Night Shift is a specific time period an employee works at night. In the Philippines, based on our labor laws, an employee who works between 10PM to 6AM is entitled to get a night shift differential of not less than 10% of his regular wage.
Carry Over vs. Counter per Hour
Carry Over
Carry Over means an employee who has a shift that includes hour(s) that falls under the night shift period will be paid a night differential for the entire shift (e.g. 8 hours). This also applies to holiday premiums.
Sample Scenario:
Shift Schedule | 12MN - 9AM |
Night Shift Period | 10PM - 6AM |
Hours Covered During Night Shift | 6 hours (12AM - 6AM) |
Hours to be Paid Night Differential | 8 hours (Carry Over) |
Although the employee only rendered 6 hours which fall on the night shift period, since the setting is Carry Over, he will still be paid the night shift differential for his entire shift (8 hours).
Counter Per Hour
Counter Per Hour means an employee will be paid night differential only for the hour(s) that fall under the night shift period. This also applies to holiday premiums.
Sample Scenario:
Shift Schedule | 2AM - 11AM |
Night Shift Period | 10PM - 6AM |
Hours Covered During Night Shift | 4 hours (2AM - 6AM) |
Hours to be Paid Night Differential | 4 hours (Counter Per Hour) |
If Counter Per Hour is set and the employee’s shift only includes 4 hours that fall on the night shift period, he will only be paid the night shift differential for 4 hours.
